Apparently, Pee-Chee was more of a West Coast thing. That surprised me because for me they were everywhere. I also remember making the brown paper book covers and scribbling on them. You should totally add some stickers and scribbles to your tax folders when you hand them over to your accountant for old time's sake. Thanks for the book recommendation, That looks amazing!
Hey Scott. Cool that you found my Pee Chee group (https://www.flickr.com/groups/peecheefolderart/)! Yup, Pee Chee folders were an integral part of my LA childhood in the '70s and '80s, hence my dedication to preserving surviving specimens. Still scouring the net for more, but it seems they're harder and harder to come by. That's cool that you've made a template to allow people to design their own. Keep creative! Cheers
Thanks and kudos for gathering a collection of Pee-Chee art and memorabilia. I was surprised at the lack of resources surrounding the history of Pee-Chee folders. Keep up the good work. I hope you uncover more.
Yeah, there's not a lot out there, so I'm glad I preserved the ones I found (and the ones people submitted). Each and every one is a unique time capsule, and a truly candid portrait of their owners. Some of these folders are amazing. There's so much to take in, and each and every doodle has some kind of meaning behind it—again, totally reflective of their owners and pop/subculture of the time.
I found a couple of articles a few years back about the history of Pee Chees (mostly about the illustrator Francis Golden who did the art we associate Pee Chees with), but that's about it. The whole reason I started my Flickr group/gallery was because I'd stumbled upon a Facebook group at the time (2011) that was dedicated to Pee Chee folders. There were a LOT of people in there that had held onto their old Pee Chees, and they spawned a lot of discussion and nostalgia over them. But the group was kinda dying out, so I tried to collect as many specimens that I could, while trying to reach the original owners so that I could give them credit if I ever reposted them.
The group eventually died out. I mean, it's still "there," but it's mostly just a catch-all for Pee Chee spam and old posts (including mine), and it's nothing like the community and social outlet it was back in 2011.
I'm still making it a point to scour the net every once in awhile to see if there's any survivors out there. I'll let you know if I find anything new. Take care!
Hi Scott. Growing up in Wisconsin, I never heard of Peachy Folders. Our schools supply stores had generic folder or, at best, Folders with the school name and logo on them. But that did not mean we didn't do horrible drawings all over them. I even did art on cover sheets of papers I had to write. Then there were the brown craft paper covers we made for the textbooks we had to turn in at the end of semesters. I had to make replacements several times when they got so covered with scribbles there was no more room.
Today the main thing I use a folder for is tax season when I print out work sheet of everything my accountant needs. I usually buy a couple= 1 for the accountant, and 1 for my copy so the if the accountant has questions I have it all in the same place and order as his. Now I see by you example that I could make an illustrated cover for the accountant.
On a different topic, I bought a book entitled: "The Book - The Ultimate Guide to rebuilding civilization" https://howtorebuildcivilization.com/ It is amazingly illustrated in what I could only call a medieval steampunk style. Expensive but kinda right in your wheelhouse. A bit cheaper through Amazon. at $119.
